Wayne Rooney has left his role as coach of Major League Soccer side DC United as the club failed to qualify for the MLS cup play-offs.
The former Man Utd star and England international spoke with the chief executive and co-chairman of the franchise, Jason Levien, and the two agreed to part ways.
DC United did win their final game of the regular season with a 2-0 victory over New York City FC, but they did not qualify for the play-offs.
Rooney said: “It’s the right time. I’ve done everything I can to get this club into the play-offs.
“It’s not a single thing that’s happened. It’s about timing.”
The 37-year-old rests assured that he is going back to see his family first and foremost, but he will be open to offers with English football clubs.
Manchester United’s record goal scorer said: “I just feel it’s the right time for me to go back to England and firstly obviously see my family.
“And then what lies ahead, I don’t know… If something comes up in October, November, of course I’ll look at it.”

However, the BBC has reported that Rooney is linked with the Birmingham City role.
The Blues are currently in the play-off places after a strong start, taking 18 points from their first 11 games.
The current manager, John Eustace, has today parted ways with the club, which means there is an opening for Rooney.

The West Midlands club has undergone great change since the summer, when they were bought out by the US-based Knighthead Capital Management LLC.
Part of this deal included a minority stake partnership with NFL legend Tom Brady, who became chairman of the advisory board for the club.
Rooney could become the latest big name to join the club, assuming the position of head coach.
However, the speculation surrounding the Manchester United legend has not been confirmed by Birmingham City.
