Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet is not concerned about opponents trying to stop in-form Liam Marshall – because his side boasts other potent attacking options.
The winger is the league’s top try scorer, having crossed the line eight times in the opening three matches of the season.
Marshall is the name on everybody’s lips as Wigan prepare to face France-based Catalans, buoyed by colossal shutout victories over Castleford Tigers and Wakefield Trinity.
And Peet is pleased he has a host of talents who can cause damage – including jet-heeled Australians Bevan French and Jai Field – should sides try and throw the shackles on Marshall.
The coach said: “Let other people worry about stopping him and that’ll probably create a space for someone else.
“We’ve got quite a bit of threat spread across the field and we’re aware you need that to be a good team.
“If you look at Liam’s tries, a lot of them are built on hard work and effort and being in the right place – one at the weekend was an interception. There’s not many ways you can stop that.”
The Warriors got off to a poor start to the season with a 27-18 loss at Hull KR, but have since rebounded with wins over Castleford and Wakefield with an aggregate 96-0 score.
The two victories put them third, just two points behind second-placed Catalans Dragons, who have won all three of their games so far.
Peet spoke about his admiration for their upcoming opponents and thinks Steve McNamara’s squad will be competing at the top end of the table come the end of the season.
He said: “Since Steve got to grips with them, I think they are one of the teams you expect to be in the semis, expect to be in the top two, three, four places. Credit to Steve.”
