Hamilton the musical will be coming to Manchester later this year.
The multi-award-winning Broadway and West End musical will arrive at Manchester’s Palace Theatre in November for a 15-week run.
It will start on 11 November this year and will run on through to 24 February 2024.
Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton tells the story of America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the very foundations of America we know today.
The musical is billed as “the story of America then, as told by America now”. The score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway.
It is the winner of 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, 7 Olivier Awards, the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.
Tickets go on sale on 13 March. There will also be a pre-sale for ATG Theatre card holders from 10 March.
The Cameron Mackintosh and Jeffrey Seller production has been performing on London’s West End since 2017 and remains a sell-out show at the Victoria Palace Theatre.
Producers Seller and Mackintosh said: “We are delighted to announce that the multi award-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda’s HAMILTON will tour the UK for the very first time opening at the Manchester Palace Theatre on Saturday 11 November 2023 for a 15 week season until Saturday 24 February 2024 followed by a run at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre from Wednesday 28 February – Saturday 27 April 2024. Casting for the UK tour is currently underway.”
Cameron Mackintosh, the theatre producer behind huge hits including Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera said Hamilton was the “most contemporary musical of modern times”.
He said: “Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton is indisputably the most brilliant, ground-breaking, contemporary musical of modern times. I feel extraordinarily fortunate that Lin and my friend Jeffrey Seller, the show’s original producer, have entrusted me with their wonderful musical in the UK and Ireland.
“The London production opened in 2017 at the Victoria Palace, a theatre I completely rebuilt to house Hamilton, where it continues to play and has proved to be as big a success as the Broadway original. So, I am thrilled that it is time to put together a second British national touring company to bring this great show to our leading cities.
“Opening first in Manchester, followed by Edinburgh – not far from where the real story of Alexander Hamilton began in Ayrshire, where his father was born in the 1700s, before he moved to Nevis in the West Indies. Tomorrow we start casting for a brilliant new company. We look forward to welcoming audiences to “the room where it happens”.”
Hamilton has book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is directed by Thomas Kail, with choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire. It is based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton.
