Sweden seeks NATO: In the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Northern European country formally announced it wanted to join NATO after 200 years of neutrality. Alongside Finland and despite threats of Russian violence, Swedish Prime Minister said ” we can’t rule out ” that Russia would take the same action against Sweden has it did Ukraine.
Liverpool suffer heartbreak: Liverpool suffered a double heartbreak in May as Manchester City claimed another Premier League title on the final day after beating beating Aston Villa 3-2 even after going two goals down. Oklahoma bans abortion: On May 19th, the Oklahoma legislature granted a final approval to a bill that made it nearly impossible to get an abortion in the state. The bill prohibited all abortions except those where the pregnancy was a result of rape or incest, as well as where abortion was necessary in order to save the life of the pregnant woman.
Australia votes Labour: On May 21st, Scott Morrisons coaliton government lost power in Australia after nine years in power. Anthony Albanese’s Labour Party won the election. This was the first time since 2007 that Australia’s Labour Party had won a seat majority.
Mona Lisa caked: The world-famous Leonardo Da Vinci masterpiece was the target of an attempted act of vandalism. The suspect used a wig and a fake wheelchair to act as an elderly woman before throwing cake at the artwork. Thankfully, the piece is surrounded by protective glass and was not damaged in any way by the cake.
