Millie Gibson has been revealed as the latest Doctor Who companion and will join Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa on screen at the end of 2023.
Earlier this year Ncuti Gatwa, best known for his role as Eric Effiong in Netflix’s Sex Education, was announced as the 15th actor to take on the role of The Doctor.
The latest companion was revealed on Children in Need last month where she emerged from the Tardis on stage.
Gibson, 18, from Tameside will have big shoes to fill in her role of Ruby Sunday, with the likes of Billie Piper and Catherine Tate having previously taken on the iconic role of the Doctor’s companion.
The young actress, best known for her role as Kelly Neelan in Coronation Street, has said the role of Ruby Sunday is a dream come true and cannot wait to accompany the Doctor on his sci-fi adventures.
Gibson said: “Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion.
“It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me.
“And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.”
Auditions for the latest Doctor Who companion were held in September, and Gatwa, who was also present, was impressed by Gibson’s performance.
Next year will be a monumental year for the series as it turns 60 – the anniversary will be marked by three episodes in which the tenth Doctor, David Tennant, will return.
Next November, Tennant will be joined by his trusty companion Donna Noble – played by Catherine Tate.
After the anniversary specials Gatwa and Gibson will take over.
Disney Branded Television and BBC have joined forces to air future seasons of Doctor Who on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland.
