Three people, including two juveniles, have been arrested after a woman was robbed at knifepoint in Manchester City Centre.
Armed police descended on New Cathedral Street, one of Manchester Christmas Market’s main hubs, at around 4:10pm on Wednesday, November 16.
The victim was threatened with a knife and had her mobile phone stolen.
Chief Inspector Wignall, of Greater Manchester Police’s City of Manchester Central Division, said: “Thankfully the victim wasn’t seriously injured and following a swift response by GMP officers, the suspects were arrested and the phone recovered.
“The city centre will become increasingly busy over the coming weeks and we want people to enjoy the Christmas period, so there will be an increased police presence throughout the Christmas period to keep people safe.”
A man and two juveniles have been arrested and currently remain in police custody for questioning.
It comes after the force announced it would be deploying more officers, including armed units, to patrol the city centre over the Christmas period.
Surveillance such as drones, CCTV and ANPR cameras are also being used to monitor the markets.
Sergeant Lee Keefe, GMP’s Project Servator coordinator, previously said: “We would like to reassure the public that GMP will be closely monitoring Manchester city centre throughout the festive period.
“Our security plans are in place for the Christmas markets and visitors can expect to see lots of police across the city centre as safety is our main priority.
“The safety and security of all those attending and involved in the markets is a priority for us over the coming weeks and I’d like to reassure the public that Manchester is a safe place to come and enjoy the festivities.”
