Manchester’s great and good lined up to pay tribute to The Queen who passed away today aged 96.
The monarch had reigned for 70 years before she died peacefully in Balmoral surrounded by her family.
Manchester United led the messages of condolence writing on their Twitter account: “We share the sorrow of the nation following the announcement from Buckingham Palace on the passing of Her Royal Highness The Queen Elizabeth II.”
Rivals Manchester City united in grief said: “Manchester City wishes to express its sincere condolences to The Royal Family following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“Her Majesty’s dedication and service has been exemplary and we join the country and the Commonwealth in mourning her loss.”
Manchester City Council said: “Manchester shares its deepest condolences with the Royal Family today following the sad news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
“The Union Flag on Manchester Central Library will be flown at half mast for ten days of national mourning.”
The city’s Ice hockey team Manchester Storm said: “On behalf of all the players, staff, and supporters of Manchester Storm, we want to share our sadness following the Queen’s death.
“We pay tribute to a lifetime of selfless and dedicated service, and send our condolences to the family.”
Her Majesty had close ties with the Greater Manchester area and was a frequent visitor.
Most recently she visited the Coronation Street set in Media City before travelling to Salford and Manchester Cathedral.
Bishop of Manchester David Walker said: “A desperately sad day; we mourn the passing of a life that has inspired, and will long expire, many of us.
“A life lived in deep and explicit Christian faith, and with an unlimited sense of humour.
“May we, who live on, be renewed and strengthened by her example, God save the King.”
