The John Rylands Library has an ongoing exhibition about the works of the Italian medieval poet Dante Alighieri, most famous for the Commedia, The Divine Comedy.
The John Rylands Library boasts one of the most comprehensive collections of early Dante editions in the whole world, missing only three editions—one of which there is only a singular copy.
John Hodgson, Associate Director (Curatorial Practices) says we can learn a great deal from the differences between editions over time and the notations from readers of the past.
He said: “Even if you don’t know anything about Dante, and even if you can’t read a word of Italian like me, there’s something to be gained from the exhibition in the sheer beauty of the books themselves.”
