Wigan band The Lathums in contention alongside music royalty for Christmas number one

Wigan band The Lathums have enjoyed a meteoric rise in 2021 and their groundbreaking year could be about to end in style.

The four-piece indie group have become surprise contenders for a Christmas number one with their festive single ‘Krampus’.

Debut release ‘How Beautiful Life Can Be’ incredibly defeated Drake to top the album charts this year and the Wigan rockers have gone from strength to strength ever since.

The quartet, fronted by singer-songwriter Alex Moore, have been touring the UK and recently played a sold-out headline show at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester.

Their Christmas tune ‘Krampus’ is associated with the darker side of the festive period, providing an alternative to the more familiar light-hearted sing-alongs.

The song was released on November 12 and the band released a short statement on social media promoting it.

”Our brand new Christmas single ‘Krampus’ drops at midnight for everyone’s listening pleasure,” the statement read.

“It was written in the blistering heat on one of the hottest days we’ve had in a long time, which is quite unusual as it’s cold and rainy most of the time here. Enjoy x”.

Following the band’s recent success, the odds of the single hitting an unlikely Christmas number one have been slashed from 150/1 to 8/1.

Only three songs lead The Lathums in the current odds, but they are formidable candidates.

The collaboration of Ed Sheeran and Elton John for a trio of Christmas songs puts the duo as overwhelming favourites in 2021.

Comedian LadBaby is also in the running to hit the top spot for a fourth year in a row, despite not yet releasing a festive number.

Meanwhile, Adele’s eagerly awaited album, ’30’, is released after a six-year absence on Friday November 19 and the British music icon is also in the mix.

But just being mentioned among the list of contenders to claim the prestigious Christmas number one spot highlights the incredibly trajectory The Lathums are on.

The coveted number one will be officially announced at 5.45pm on Christmas Eve.

Christmas Number One Odds:

Elton John & Ed Sheeran – 8-13

LadBaby – 7-4

Adele – 5-1

The Lathums – 8-1

Abba – 12-1

The Wanted – 33-1
