Social media apps Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp crashed last night for several hours, due to a configuration change.
Facebook released a statement confirming all their services came to a halt due to an error with backbone routers.
This affected the apps owned by Facebook, such as Instagram and WhatsApp.
Facebook issued a message on their Twitter page, to let users know they were aware of the issue and working to resolve it.
The social media crash affected users globally.
Twitter was the only unaffected app, so users communicated on Twitter to discuss the issue with people who were experiencing their apps being offline.
By 5.00pm #Facebookdown was trending on twitter.
Weather Presenter Laura Tobin, from Good Morning Britain, described the issue as “apocalyptic” on the show this morning.
The issue was resolved by 11.00pm last night.
All three apps are back online this morning.
