Womxnchester International Film Festival will debut its first ever edition at the Everyman Cinema this Saturday.
The festival will showcase 30 short films from female and female-identifying filmmakers from around the world, boasting a few local films from filmmakers such as Portia. A Buckley, Sally Cancello and Stephanie Upsall.
The event will be divided up into five sets, each featuring six films, that range from hard hitting documentaries to tearjerker dramas and side splitting comedies.
Event director Nicole Pott said: “We’ve got loads of great films, it’s just showcasing that women do have a voice and we do have something to say and we can fit into any genre and make people laugh and cry and get angry.”
With a long period of uncertainty with the COVID-19 pandemic, Pott notes the importance of returning to the cinema: “It’s really important to see films in the cinema. As a director, it’s been hard to see films go live during the pandemic. There’s nothing better than seeing your film on screen – it’s so affirming and such a different experience.”
The opening and closing programmes will feature films from the north, as Pott and her team wanted to highlight northern talent that can often be forgotten by the film industry.
“People need to look towards Manchester, outside of London. There’s so much creativity happening here and it needs to be talked about,” Pott explained.
The festival will take place across the whole day, starting at 10am on the Saturday 25th September, ending with an afterparty hosted at 53Two.
