Newsquest has today launched a new hyper-local weekly newspaper and daily website covering the city of Salford.
Priced at 80p, the new paper is live on salfordcitynews.co.uk and aims to provide coverage of news, sport and community content.
Karl Holbrook, regional group editor for Lancashire and Greater Manchester, told MM: “Salford is a really vibrant place and it is undergoing rapid change.
“We want to be there to both mark that change but also stand up for the heritage, culture and people that already thrive in Salford.”
Salford is separated from the city of Manchester via the River Irwell and its development has seen the rise of Media City which now houses the main northern hubs of the BBC and ITV.
The area is already covered by the Reach-owned daily newspaper the Manchester Evening News.
However, Holbrook added that there has been a call from residents for better coverage in the area.
Holbrook added: “Both on the ground and with regards to local advertising, the response has been incredible with everybody agreeing that this is what Salford needs.
“Salford is almost hidden in plain sight, but we are passionate about representing our city and we wanted to celebrate that with the traditional community news coverage that it deserves.
“We won’t always get it right, but our effort is to be an independent voice to give light to as many perspectives from Salford as possible, which is what I think journalism always strives to be.”
Salford City News printed its first edition on Friday and is available now.
