Vincent Kompany’s wonder strike against Leicester last season has been nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year’s ‘Sporting Moment of 2019’.
With the game entering the final 20 minutes, City’s former captain found a strike from the Gods from 25 yards out to send his side into a 1-0 lead.
The strike had fans and his fellow players alike in shock, with striker Sergio Agüero admitting afterwards that he initially didn’t want his skipper to shoot.
His side went on and won the title, the goal proving to be a pivotal point in his side winning the league.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Kompany said: “Everyone was saying don’t shoot but I’ve not come this far in my career to be told when I can and can’t shoot.
“I’ve had 15 years of top-level midfielders telling me not to shoot but I always told them one day I am going to have a shot from outside the box and I’m going to score a goal!”
The goal has been shortlisted alongside Divock Origi’s goal against Barcelona in the Champions League, Lucy Bronze’s wonder strike in the World Cup, Jos Buttler breaking the stumps in the ICC World Cup final, Ben Stokes hitting the winning four in the Headingley Ashes test and Suzann Pettersen’s final putt in the Solheim Cup.
The ceremony will take place in Aberdeen on Sunday 15th December, and Jos Buttler’s winning moment has opened up as the 8/11 favourite with the bookies, followed by Stokes’ four at 2/1.
