General Election 2019: Meet the Wigan candidates

Labour’s Lisa Nandy won the seat in 2017 with a sizeable 33.7% majority. Nandy received 62.2% of the votes, over 16,000 more than the Conservative Party candidate in second place.

The seat has been a Labour stronghold since 1918. Nandy has held the seat since 2010, and has gradually increased her support from 21,404 votes (2010) to 29,575 (2017).

The constituency voted strongly to leave during the EU referendum, with 62.96% of voters voting in favour of Brexit.

Peter Ernest Jacobs (Green Party)

Jacobs, a company director, is hoping to increase the Green Party share in Wigan from 1.6% (2017). His nearest opponent is the Liberal Democrats who achieved 163 more votes last time out.

William Malloy (Brexit Party)

Malloy, an accountant and lecturer on public sector governance, is the first Brexit Party representative to contest this seat. A Eurosceptic, he aims to give Wigan’s Leave voters a voice in Westminster.

Lisa Nandy (Labour)

Lisa Nandy, the former Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, has been the MP for Wigan for nine years. She promises to listen to her constituents on Brexit and tackle cuts to spending on the NHS and young people. Nandy is the favourite to retain her seat, having proved popular over the last decade.

Thomas is an I.T.  professional specialising in I.T. forensics, compliance and cyber security. The Liberal Democrats received 916 votes in 2017.

Ashley Williams (Conservatives)

Williams is a manager at international healthcare charity St. Mark Universal Care, a charity providing healthcare to disadvantaged communities around the world. Williams is passionate about finding a way forward after Brexit. 2017 saw a 7.8% swing for the Conservatives and Williams will be hoping to build on that success.
