Dirty Dancing musical promises to be like ‘reliving the film live’ as it comes to Manchester’s Palace Theatre

Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage visits the Palace Theatre in Manchester next month.

The 1987 cult classic film and iconic love story – along with its Academy-winning soundtrack – has been reproduced for the theatre with a modern twist.

Showcasing some incredible choreography and ‘sensationally sexy dancing’ the production finishes with one of the best-known dance scenes of all time as the leads perform to I’ve Had The Time Of My Life.

Michael O’Reilly is making his professional debut and stars as Baby’s love interest Johnny Castle, originally played by Patrick Swayze in the original movie.

Talking about the show, the leading man said: “The team do such a good job of bringing the story to the stage so it’s like reliving the film live.

“You’ve got all the dances, all the music, the band’s on stage kicking butt – it’s such a fun show.”

Kira Malou returns to her role as Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman, having played the role in the 2016-17 stage production.

After promising not to ‘stray too far from what Jennifer Grey did in the film’, the actress added: “Although I’m being a bit bolder with the choices so when she’s being sexy, I want people to be able to see that ‘Baby’ can be really sexy, fiery and smart – to really show the depths to her.”

The performance tells the story of 17-year-old Baby who falls for dance instructor Johnny on a family vacation to the Catskills in 1963. She is banned from seeing him but love triumphs in this spectacular romantic reproduction.

The musical features 35 hit songs including Hungry Eyes, Hey! Baby and Do You Love Me?.

The original soundtrack has currently sold 32 million copies worldwide since its release.

Writer and co-producer of the original film, Eleanor Bergstein, has adapted the film for stage, ensuring that she’s included some extra scenes as well as all the memorable hits from the original.

The tour first opened at the Theatre Royal Brighton in September last year and will land in Manchester on April 22.
