Oldham manager Richie Wellens has promised Latics fans that they can expect up to three more transfers this month as he looks to improve his squad ahead of a potential relegation showdown.
The Oldham boss has already brought in five players this month with midfielder Jack Byrne becoming the latest to move to Boundary Park on Monday.
Speaking after Oldham’s 1-1 draw against promotion chasing Rotherham, Wellens confirmed he is looking to further bolster his squad this January.
“In terms of transfers coming in we need one centre-back and two strikers.
“I want some pace upfront. I like (Craig) Davies, I like (Aaron) Holloway, but they are too similar.
“I want someone who can do something that bit different, run in behind or threaten the goal more in terms of one on ones or getting in front of defenders. So, I am trying to get a striker.”
The 38-year-old chief also added he has identified his targets, but admits there is a high level of competition to bring a striker to the club at a feasible price.
“I have spoken to the players I want to bring in. It is just a question of whether we can afford it financially,” he said.
“We might have to ask a few favours in from other clubs, but I will be trying my best.
“It is difficult to get a permanent deal done now, especially for strikers.
“Every manager I speak to are all after strikers. The same names are on each list, so we have to try and think a bit differently.
“I have got one I want to get over the line before Wednesday.”
In a week that has already seen five players leave the club, Wellens didn’t deny that even more players could be moved on from Boundary Park.
“There has been a bit of a fire sale here this week because our slots have been too big in terms of financial fair play.
“We needed to get rid of players to enable us to register the ones we want playing.
“I have said it so many times before, there is no need having 30 odd players at this club.
“[A squad of] 18 or 19 players and 2 or 3 loan players then you can build from there. Same wage budget, but fewer players and more quality.”
Oldham take on Leicester City under-21s on Wednesday in the third round of the EFL trophy which if they progress will see the Latics play against second in League One Shrewsbury.
