Coronation Street legend Liz Dawn has died aged 77.
The soap star – famed for playing Vera Duckworth – passed away peacefully at her home last night.
Liz’s family said they are ‘heartbroken’ in a statement announcing the actress’ death.
It reads: “We are devastated and heartbroken at the passing of our much-loved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, the incredible Liz Dawn.”
The statement concludes: “She has been the love, light and inspiration in our lives and we are bereft at her passing.”
Meanwhile, Coronation Street has issued similar words in which Liz is praised for her 34 years on the cobbles.
A statement reads: “Liz brought so much joy and happiness to so many. She was a wonderful actress who will forever be a true Coronation Street legend.”
The show’s executive producer Kieran Roberts says Liz will be remembered by the cast and crew for her ‘huge affection’.
“Liz Dawn was a true Coronation Street legend, a brilliant actor and a wonderful person.
“Everyone lucky enough to have worked with Liz during her thirty-four years playing Corrie icon Vera Duckworth will remember her with huge affection.”
Liz had been suffering from the lung condition emphysema, but the cause of her death has not yet been confirmed.
The Leeds-born star first appeared on Coronation Street in 1974.
She became a viewer favourite thanks to her fiery relationship with onscreen husband Jack Duckworth, played by the late Bill Tarmey.
Liz was written out of the show when her health began to deteriorate in 2007.
She made one final appearance as a ghost in November 2010.
Since the sad news of Liz’s death broke, tributes have been pouring in from people across the entertainment industry.
Tony Blackburn tweeted: “So sorry to hear the news that Liz Dawn has passed away. Thanks for the hours of fun on Coronation Street you gave me RIP.”
Kym Marsh added: “Just heard the terrible news of our lovely Liz Dawn’s passing. I’m so sad. What a wonderful lady. She will be so missed. Love to her family.”
