Four-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny admits she is champing at the bit to see what more special memories Manchester’s Dame Sarah Storey can give her this weekend.
Both Kenny and Storey will compete this weekend in the high-octane Revolution Cycling Champions League at Lee Valley VeloPark on December 2 and 3.
The London event is the conclusion of the 14th season of the Revolution Series and the venue will be familiar to Storey – Great Britain’s most successful-ever Paralympian – as she returns to the scene where she bagged two of her 14 Paralympic titles.
The London Velodrome is also where Kenny won the first two of her four Olympic medals, and she admits competing there again with Storey in the Revolution Series will be another happy memory.
“Sarah is going to get such a great reception,” said Kenny. “She is unbelievable – the one memory that sticks in my mind about her is a national points race two years ago.
“She rode away from the group and actually won the points race, and I just remember thinking how strong she was, it was unreal.
“She’s just so confident in the bunch, and I think that it just does prove that she is unstoppable, that is her mentality and that’s how she races.
“It’s so good to see her racing with us and getting stuck in.
“I hope she’s up there fighting for the win, but if she’s had a break like I have, I’m not so sure!”
Storey warmed up for her capital outing by winning the Omnium last weekend in the first-ever round of the Revolution Cycling Champions League in Manchester.
She did so alongside Neah Evans and her partner was full of praise for Storey’s abilities despite her post-Games break.
“It’s the first time we’ve actually raced together, and we just worked well together straight from the start it was so good having her up there with me,” Evans said.
“It was a high standard, I had to work really hard, there’s so many girls out there on a good level that makes the racing really close, and from a crowd point of view that’s great as it’s anyone’s game.”
