Lights, camera, action! Oldham’s first cinema in 30 YEARS receives opening date

A brand new cinema is set to open in Oldham – the town centre’s first in more than 30 years.

The town – home to roughly 224,000 people – will once again be able to catch all the latest films when work finishes on redeveloping the Old Town Hall.

Residents have been waiting patiently for the historic Grade-II listed building to be converted into an 789-seat seven-screen Odeon cinema and restaurant complex.

The landmark has been in redevelopment since 2015 and will finally be opening its doors to the public on Friday, October 21.

A grand opening event will take place that evening and Oldham Council Leader Jean Stretton is excited about the potential boost to the local economy.

“People will soon be able to see for themselves all the work that’s been going on to protect the heritage and majesty of this old building,” she said.

“The Old Town Hall is going to be the heartbeat of the new Oldham town centre – one that has a great offer for families, visitors, business and people of all generations.

“I’d like to thank all local businesses, motorists and visitors to the town centre for their patience during the construction period.

“The wait is almost over – and I’m sure the prize is going to be worth it.”

Oldham town centre has been without a cinema for more than 30 years and the long-awaited occasion will be marked with music, attractions and performances with a cinematic theme.

The development has also seen top brands Costa Coffee, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Loungers and Nando’s join the venue as part of the restaurant complex.

On Friday, September 16 a team of judges from the GM Chamber of Commerce’s Property and Construction Committee were the latest visitors to the site.

They were assessing the project’s nomination for their ‘Building of the Year 2016’ award.

The winner will be announced on Thursday, October 20 – one day before the development opens to the public.
