Rare Marvel artwork signed by ‘comic book godfather’ Stan Lee to be displayed at two Manchester galleries

A collection of rare Marvel artwork is set to be unveiled at galleries in Manchester.

The Marvel Superheroes collection will be shown for the first time on March 19 at Manchester’s Castle Fine Art gallery in Deansgate, and Castle Galleries at the Trafford Centre.

The collection will feature a selection of iconic Marvel comic book covers dating from the 60s to the present day.

The works include images of The Amazing Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers, The Invincible Iron Man, Wolverine and X-Men.

Released by fine art publishers Washington Green, whose previous collections have sold out in just five minutes, the artwork is expected to sell in record time.

The ten new deluxe prints have been made in editions of only nine have each been signed by comic book godfather Stan Lee, now 93, and are priced at £2,950 each.

Lee is credited by many with introducing some of Marvel’s most popular characters.

“With comic book sales increasing year on year, and the success of films such as Marvel’s Deadpool at the box office, it’s no surprise that our Superheroes collections have proved some of the company’s most popular to date,” said Paul Watson, Area Sales Manager for Manchester’s Castle galleries.

“Marvel has had a huge impact on popular culture – I think we can all relate to its very human characters in some way.

“This collection will appeal to both art collectors and superhero fans alike – giving them the chance to own a slice of comic book history.”

As annual sales of comics continue to increase – up by nearly 9% in 2015 – it looks like the comic book market collapse, an event that forced Marvel to file for bankruptcy in 1997, seems to be comfortably in the past.
