Rochdale assistant manager Chris Beech says both he and Rochdale football club have big ambitions ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with Colchester United.
Dale are looking to bounce back from last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Swindon which saw them remain in 13th place in League One.
Keith Hill’s right-hand man Beech admitted that this season’s aim is to retain League One status but said that the club have far loftier ambitions in the future.
“I want to manage in the Premier League,” Beech said.
“The players want to aim for the top as well, that’s what you want but the challenge in front of us is retaining League One status.
“The history of club tells you this is not normal [to be in League One] so if we progress that normality we have a chance of getting into football heaven and flirting with the Championship.
“You’ve got to be very careful what you try and attain because there’s a massive gamble in going for Championship football.”
As for the immediate business of this weekend’s clash with Colchester, who are on a run of six straight league defeats, Beech was keen for his side not to be distracted by the U’s off-field issues.
“We’ve got to take care of our own house, we’ve got to be respectful of our opponent, which we are,” Beech added.
“They’ve got a change of manager and he’s stated he doesn’t want the job which sometimes works brilliantly. It makes players relaxed and the message less threatening.
“They do score a lot of goals and they concede a lot of goals. We’ll just make sure we’re on our front foot and do what we do.
“If we get six points in two games fantastic, if we get four it’s also brilliant. All I can guarantee is that with good support from our fans it’s a good place to be working.
“We will be doing our best to achieve what the fans want.”
