Record-breaking passenger numbers for Manchester Airport as people escape city’s soggy summer weather

A record-breaking number of passengers have been flying through Manchester Airport to escape the rain-soaked weather of the North West.

A staggering 2.5 million people used the North West’s biggest Airport in the month of July – the largest number in its 77 year history.

Also at an all time high was the 22.5 million annual rolling passenger total for the airport.

Managing Director Ken O’Toole said: “The wet weather and additional capacity has given Manchester Airport a fantastic boost across Europe and long-haul to destinations in the USA, Hong Kong and to the Middle East and we are well on track for our best and busiest summer ever.

“With over 22 million people living within our two hour catchment, two full length runways and all-time record passenger numbers, Manchester Airport has and will continue to have the available capacity and demand of our catchment.”

Manchester Airport is the largest airport in the UK outside of London and these increases will enhance its reputation as the global gateway in the North.

The airport serves 22 million people and over 60 percent of U.K businesses are all within 2.5 hours drive away.

International flights have rose by 8.7 percent from the same period last year, and the additions of new destinations in the USA have been a significant factor behind the growth.

Emirates alone served 38,000 people for the month of July again a new record.

Manchester’s football clubs have also added to the numbers, with players getting away for a holiday before the new season, clubs jetting away on preseason tours helping an 11% increase in private jet use through the airport.
