It may have taken a while for the confirmation to come through but try letting that stop new Ashton-under-Lyne MP Angela Reyner.
After finally being announced as the winner, at around 9am the morning after the election count had started, Ms Reyner became the first female MP for not only Ashton-under-Lyne, but for the whole of Tameside
The mum-of-three had been in high sprits at the count before she was elected and said that it had been a long and interesting day and said it was fantastic speaking to residents.
She also added: “It’s been fantastic meeting residents listening to people hearing their views and seeing the passion.
“You hear a lot of the time that people are disillusioned in politics but I have not seen that when I’ve been on the door step.”
Ms Reyner told MM that she has been listening to the people of Ashton, Droylsdon and Failsworth and wants to continue doing this and give them a voice now that she has been elected.
She said that Parliament needs common sense.
“For a girl that has come from the background that I have, a local girl that grew up on a council estate,” Mrs Reyner added.
“I didn’t finish all of my GCSE’s and never went to university, but what I say to that is that I’ve got a masters in real life.”
Once she had won the Labour seat, she said in her acceptance speech that it was a huge honour and hoped that she made her family proud.
She also said that she was proud from where she has come from: “As a former manual worker, I worked as a home carer looking after the elderly, I learnt about what’s most important in life and that’s people.
“I want to inject some reality into parliament and bring common sense and commitment.
“I will work so hard to protect our NHS as I know so many of us in the constituency rely on the NHS just like my family does.”
And judging by her Tweet yesterday, it hasn’t taken Ms Reyner long to settle into her surroundings.
It’s been an incredibly busy day, lots of information to take in and lots to do. My selfie outside work pic.twitter.com/IUyfAvqlM3
