Higher Blackley community centre to celebrate 50-year anniversary this weekend

Live bands, belly dancing and Tai Chi will be on display this Sunday as Higher Blackley Community Centre marks 50 years at the heart of the district.

Hundreds of people, community groups, bands and local cadet groups are set to parade through the neighbourhood, starting at midday from the community centre.

The centre will be the celebration hub from midday through until 4.30pm, while live music from local bands including The Taylors and the Blackley Band will provide the soundtrack to the occasion.

Cllr Bernard Priest, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “On the surface this is a celebration of the community centre being at the heart of Blackley for 50 years – but at its heart, this is also a celebration of every single person that lives in the local neighbourhood and the diversity that comes along with it.”

Revellers will also have the opportunity to try Tai Chi, along with sampling performances from the Blackley Belly Dancers, Tracing Steps and Socialise.

A range of community and local interest groups will have stalls at the event, where local people can speak to those already involved, learn more about what the groups do and perhaps have the chance to get involved themselves.

Cllr Priest added: “We would like to invite the whole community to come along and enjoy the free festivities. Bring the family, call on your neighbours and meet some new people.

“The strength of our communities makes Manchester a special place to live – and that should be celebrated as often as possible.”
