THREE former Altrincham school pupils have been elected as MPs representing constituencies across the country.
Damian Hinds, Paul Maynard and Greg Mulholland were all pupils at St Ambrose Grammar School before going on to win seats in the 2010 election.
Whilst they may have previously bumped into each other around school, now they have been rubbing shoulders in the corridors of Westminster.
Paul, Conservative MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys, said: “Winning the election in such a marginal seat is the proudest achievement of my life.”
And Paul was eager to praise St Ambrose for his success.
“I had a thoroughly enjoyable time there, and it gave me a good grounding for the rest of my life,” he said.
Damian, Conservative MP for East Hampshire, had similar praise for the school, where he was a year above Greg, Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West.
Damian said: “It’s a fantastic school. I enjoyed being part of the debating society and it’s quite possible that I came up against Greg on it!”
Damian, 40, had previously stood for election in 2005 in the Stretford and Urmston constituency, but had lost out to Beverley Hughes.
He said: “It was very exciting to win my seat in East Hampshire, but it was a strange double feeling as I felt the weight of responsibility.”
The school’s Deputy Head at the time, Phil Howard, said: “They are extremely creative, talented young men who always had a mind of their own and were prepared to voice their own opinions.”
“We wish them every success regardless of their political persuasions in the coming parliamentary elections,” he added.
