MM's Top Sport Tips - Dunhill Links

By Robert J Pollock

This weekend’s Alfred Dunhill Championship is underway and the three courses play host to a supreme field with all eyes on the ‘Celtic Tiger’ AKA Rory McIlroy.

The US Open champion heads a super strong card including the likes of Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and last year’s winner Martin Kaymer. The pro-am event is hugely popular amongst the players but don’t be fooled into thinking this is a light-hearted event- there is money to be made!

Graeme McDowell EW @ 11/1

McDowell has made a blistering start to the first day at Kingsbarns. He stands at -5 through 16. The former US Open champion is no stranger to links golf. McDowell hasn’t had the finest of seasons by any stretch of the imagination but there is no questioning the Portrush man’s talent. He is off to a flyer on day one so get on before he goes into single figures!

Dustin Johnson EW @ 40/1

The big hitting yank is a very welcome guest to the Scottish links this week and has displayed some proficiency in these conditions having finished runner-up to Darren Clarke at the British Open. Johnson is on the lookout for a new caddy having lost Joe La Cava to that man Tiger Woods but that won’t impede the big man who features strongly in high-class fields. He has made a slowish start but he can score as fast as anyone on tour so don’t rule him out of the equation quite yet. 40/1 is good each-way value.

Chris Wood @ 80/1

The Englishman is an excellent links player as his two Open top fives in three appearances prove. He has made a good start and sits coolly on -3 through nine at Kingsbarns as this goes to print. He is another one who combines quick scoring with solidity in the tough conditions and he looks way too long at 80/1 for a former European Tour Rookie of the Year.
