David Platt plays down Joleon Lescott selection snub as Gael Clichy fights for fitness ahead of Wigan and Everton ties

STILL IMPORTANT: Joleon Lescott

By Dean Wilkins

Having seen young Manchester City centreback Matija Nastasic form a regular partnership with Vincent Kompany, Joleon Lescott is still firmly part of their title-retaining plans.

The England defender has been out of action with a back injury but has successfully recovered and is available for selection.

But after not even being taken to Stamford Bridge for City’s goalless draw with Chelsea, David Platt is playing down Roberto Mancini’s preference of 19-year-old Nastasic.

"Joleon is fine. He will be available for selection like he was available for selection for a few games,” he said.

Nastasic moved from Fiorentina for a reported £12million on transfer deadline day and has coped well with the Premier League’s style of play.

He has started City’s last seven games and played a pivotal part in their unbeaten league record this season.

But one defender who will not be available for selection in tomorrow’s visit to Wigan Athletic is Gael Clichy as the Frenchman fullback is still suffering a niggling ankle injury.

Platt said: "Gael is progressing well, if not better, than we probably expected, but he won't be involved tomorrow.

"I don't think he will be on the training pitch even towards the end of this week so Saturday [against Everton] is out as well."
