Angela Hilton has been rewarded for her work in Sale with a leg on this summer’s Olympic Torch Relay and she insists it will be as much about the community as it will her.
The 35-year-old, of Shrewsbury Road and a mother of two children eight-year-old Ben and five-year-old Abbie, works tirelessly as a volunteer at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School.
Not only performing duties as a dinner lady, Angela is devoted to helping out staff and children alike at the school and has since completed a course to become a teaching assistant.
Currently helping out with maternity cover at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, she will be one of just 8,000 people to carry the London 2012 Torch courtesy of Lloyds TSB.
Angela will run with the Torch on June 24 as it passes through Trafford and wants the whole area, not just herself, to get a feel of the London 2012 Olympics.
“I have got plans for a few people to come and watch, it is quite exciting and it is not just great for me but for the whole community,” she said.
“I wasn’t expecting anything more to come of the nomination. It was a bit of a shock and I never expected myself to be put through or anything like that, it is a great honour.
“I am probably not the most sporty person and people might see me do this and laugh but I have a lot of fun watching sport more than taking part.
“The school and the church are so enthusiastic about the Olympic Games, they are really excited and to have somebody involved is great.
“The school are really, really enthusiastic about all of the top sports and they have a very successful sports team and the Olympics is a big topic for us.”
Angela was nominated to carry the Olympic Torch by family friend Marcella Phelan, through Lloyds TSB’s nationwide search, and is expecting a truly memorable day.
“Marcella is known to my family and she knows about the work I do with the church and school and she put me forward for it because of everything I do,” she added.
“And it is lovely to know that this is something that I can tell my grandchildren and hopefully my children will remember me doing it.”
