Preview: Sofar Sounds @ MadLab, Northern Quarter

Charlie Bennett

MM can exclusively reveal that this month’s Sofar Sounds is taking place at MadLab in the Northern Quarter tonight.

Sofar – Songs from a Room – is a series of music nights that takes place in more than 10 cities worldwide, but always in secret and intimate rooms. (the location is always revealed only hours before the gig)

The gigs are free and invites are sent out via a mailing list. The rules are: no talking, no mobiles, and no departures until all performers finish. It’s music for those that like their gigs to be quiet and chummy.

Scarlett Johansson recently visited the New York counterpart, and Twilight's Robert Pattison turned up at a Sofar in London in 2010 – so who knows, maybe a Mancunian A-Lister will turn up tonight?

The event will be held in the top attic floor of the MadLab building and, due to the unconventional nature of the venue, they have slightly stricter door policy. It's a buzzer entry which will be manned until 8.30pm – after which there will be no entry.

It's a BYOB night so attendees can bring their own beverage of choice. But if they forget, there will be some drinks available to buy from the owners of the building on the night. Attendees may also want to bring a cushion as they’re likely to sit on the floor.

Though there is no charge, you can help Sofar out with a donation. 100% of money they take in goes to keep their nights and aid promotion and their movement to support and nurture new music.

The night starts at 8.15 pm and the nights are usually over by 10.30pm.
