SUCCESS: Rowetta at this year's Pride

Organisers of Manchester Pride have declared that next year's event will be bigger and better than ever.

This year's event, which celebrated Manchester Pride's 21st birthday, was the last to be headed by Jackie Crozier, who recently won an award for her four year involvement.

Her departure has prompted the board of trustees to review the aims and structure of the charity.

A new Chief Executive role along with a new Event Manager position will be created to oversee the changes which will see a series of events held throughout the year, the earliest, possibly being held in the spring.

“The success of the Pride Fringe running up to the Big Weekend proves that we can do more to raise awareness of LGBT issues” said Vicken Couligian, Manchester Pride’s Chair, on canal-st.co.uk.

“We want to fully realise our potential,” he added.

The ideas, still in their early stages, seem to be popular in Manchester’s gay village.

Tony Cooper, manager of Via bar and restaurant, said: “Part of the whole ethos of Pride is doing events for our community, the fringe events this year were fantastic but under-supported, so any expansion is positive.”

Stephanie Rathgeber, 22, a recruitment consultant from Manchester, said: “Although progress has been made on gay issues, pride events are still very important, there is still a lot of prejudice directed at gay people out there.”

Manchester Pride 2012 is scheduled to take place over ten days from 17 – 27 August.

The event, one of hundreds held in the UK throughout the summer months, has become one of the largest in Europe, with thousands taking part to raise awareness of gay issues and celebrate gay life.
