Canal Street launched its official iPhone app last week ahead of the start of the Manchester Pride festival that celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life, tomorrow.
The app, which is free to download, keeps users up-to-date with what’s happening in and around the Canal Street community, which is the gay centre of the city.
It will feature competitions and news feeds from Canal Street and its partners, including Mancunian Matters.
The app will also act as an outlet for local businesses to reach out to Manchester’s LGBT community via exclusive offers and updates.
The app, which is the first of its kind, is a fresh and exciting step forward for Canal Street, according to Nick Coulthurst, who is part of the Canal Street team.
Although the app will be live all year round, it will play a new and exciting part in this weekend’s Manchester Pride festival, by providing festival goers with information about the best bars, clubs and venues in and around the festival, as well as offering all the latest news and festival goings on.
“It’s very immediate, that’s the whole point, people can find out what’s happening over the weekend, everything they see on their phone will be happening as they view it,” said Nick, who has been involved in pioneering the app.
“It’s very simple really, we’re aiming to keep people informed in a modern way.
“It’s had a great response, it looks like it’s been a success so far,” he added.
Although the app is only currently available for the iPhone, via its App Store¸ the Canal Street team are working alongside developers to make it available on other smart phone platforms in the near future.

To compliment the new app, the website has also launched its own Canal Street card, so now you really can drop your gay card!
The card is designed to keep the LGBT community and friends in the loop when it comes to offers, events and discounts.
In association with Touch VIP, the card provides a range of benefits across dozens of venues and attractions around the city and even beyond the Gay Village itself.
Offers range from discounts at Pad Homeware and Gifts to exclusive Pride two for one drinks offers at Taurus Bar.
The card is currently priced at a launch cost of £12 for six months or £20 for 12 months and offers are updated regularly both on the Touch VIP website and the Canal Street card Facebook page.
