GUILTY: Melvyn Edwards sentenced tomorrow

By Dean Wilkins

A cruise ship singer was found guilty of raping and killing his wife at Manchester Crown Court today.

Melvyn Edwards, 59, of Greater Western Street, Moss Side, was convicted of two counts of rape and the manslaughter of mother-of-three Juliet Edwards, 48, in front of the court.

Edwards will be sentenced tomorrow after denying murder and rape.

He admitted in an earlier trial how he told relatives ‘I forced myself on her’ but that this referred to kissing not sex.

The children of Mrs Edwards said after her death: "We are devastated by the tragic loss of our mother.

"She was a wonderful, loving, caring mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend with a kind heart and a generous nature. We want justice for her, she did not deserve this.

"Her memory will live with us forever and she will never be forgotten."
