The funeral for the Manchester building contractor who was kidnapped and killed in Nigeria will be held today.
Chris McManus, 28, from Oldham, was kidnapped from his apartment by gunmen in North-West Nigeria in May last year.
When UK Special Forces attempted to rescue Mr McManus, members of the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram murdered him on the March 8.
In a statement, the McManus family said: “Today is a sad and emotional day for our entire family as we say goodbye to Chris.
“But it is also a day for us to celebrate Chris’s life and remember our loving son, brother, boyfriend and true friend to many.”
The McManus family said that Mr McManus had a positive and happy outlook on life and everyone who met Mr McManus had a heart of gold and always had time to help anyone in need.
Mr McManus was an avid supporter of Oldham Athletic Football Club and travelled to watch his team at Wembley in the 1990 League Cup.
