ANDY GRAY: Surprised by Scholes move

Sharethematch.com ambassador Andy Gray was talking to Ben Baker, exclusively for Mancunian Matters.

I was surprised by Sir Alex Ferguson bringing Paul Scholes back to Manchester United and I must admit I wasn’t sure about it at first – but I am coming round to the idea now.

People have been looking at the returns of Scholes and Thierry Henry at Arsenal and people are saying they are similar things, but I don’t think they are.

Henry is 34 and Paul is in his 37th year and plays in an area of the pitch, particularly in the big games, that can be very testing physically and demanding.

I might be totally wrong here but what I think is that Sir Alex Ferguson has sat there and thought ‘we are out of the Champions League so we can’t win that so what is the one other thing I want?

‘I don’t want City winning my title and taking it away from my team’.

So can Paul Scholes perform in the big games and provide something that United might need? The answer is yes.

In Premier League terms it makes perfect sense, particularly in an area that I think Sir Alex lacks genuine and consistent creativity.

I think it is probably only for this season and to me it makes perfect sense.
