THUG: Riley given suspended jail-term

By Dean Wilkins

A Manchester thug who handed himself in after seeing CCTV footage of him attacking a student on Crimewatch is being given a suspended sentence.

Christopher Riley, 23, Oldham, was hunted by officers after punching Scott Huxtable and leaving him unconscious on Valentine’s Day during a night out in Bath.

Unemployed Riley was filmed and broadcast on the BBC show and travelled 190 miles to give himself up.

Chair of the Bench Diana Cooper said: "This was a serious assault at night in a public place in which a serious injury was caused with alcohol the relevant factor.

"Having seen the clip on Crimewatch you immediately handed yourself into police.

"You pleaded guilty at your first appearance and have showed remorse for your actions."

Bath Magistrates gave Riley a five-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months.

He was also told he must complete 200 hours of unpaid work within 12 months and pay Mr Huxtable £200 in compensation.
