Rooney to miss Manchester United's Europa League tie with Ajax

Wayne Rooney will not feature in Manchester United’s Europa League tie with Ajax after being ruled out by a throat infection.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the United talisman will not be involved at Old Trafford on Thursday night in the hope that the striker will be fit to face Norwich in the Premier League on Sunday.

Rooney reported for training on Wednesday after developing the problem following the first leg in Amsterdam but was sent home in a bid to ensure he is fully recovered for the trip to Carrow Road.

"Wayne is out tomorrow," said Ferguson.

"He has a really bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam and we gave him some medication but it got worse. He has been in bed over the weekend and came in today for the first time and we are trying hard to get him right for Sunday."

The England star was the only significant absentee from United’s first-team squad at training with midfielder Anderson returning.

United take a 2-0 aggregate lead into the second leg after a comfortable victory in Holland and are firm favourites to progress.

Should United secure a last-16 birth they will face either Lokomotiv Moscow or Athletic Bilbao next month.
