NO CONTRACT: Owen leaves United

By Dean Wilkins

England hero Michael Owen is close to finding a new club after being let go by Manchester United this summer.

The 32-year-old striker played at Old Trafford for three seasons after joining on a free transfer – but his injury-blighted career continued to disrupt his playing time.

Owen played just four games for the Reds last campaign – making his last in November – and Premier League club Stoke City have been linked with a move.

The former England forward Tweeted: "Getting closer to finding a new club. Had a good deal of interest but just need to pick right! Can't wait to get going again."

The former Real Madrid and Newcastle star’s move to United was met with distaste from Liverpool fans – the team he found success with – and he has also been linked with rivals Everton.
