Three marvellous Manchester motorbike rides

By James Helliwell

We take a look at three cracking motorcycle rides in and around the Manchester area.

Manchester to Matlock

This motorcycle route takes the rider from the outskirts of Manchester city to the scenic landscape of Derbyshire county. It is a lengthy route that covers more than 150 miles and makes more a perfect weekend road trip. The route features a mixture of straight runs and twisting rural byways, making it a challenging route for even the most skilled riders. The ride begins by taking the Ashton Old Road (A635) towards Saddleworth and through the northern end of the Derbyshire Peak District. This part of the ride takes in some of the most spectacular landscape in the region and there are many areas where you can pull over to enjoy the view. At the town of Barnsley merge onto the A628 and follow it towards Glossop, heading back through the Peak District. Take the Chapel Road to the A6, a faster road that takes the rider through the picturesque towns of Bakewell and Buxton. Continue on the A6 until you arrive at the historic town of Matlock.

Greenfield to Holmfirth

Start in the Greater Manchester town of Saddleworth and head out onto the A635. This route is a nice rural ride that takes in some of the regions finest countryside and is easy enough for riders of all levels to handle. The first 6 miles of the route take the rider through the middle of the Peak District. As it is a short ride, about 9 miles in total, riders can take the time to stop along the way at many of the Peak District's beauty spots. At the 7 mile mark, merge left onto Thick Hollins Road for approximately 200 yards before taking a right onto Dean Road. This part of the ride is in a slightly more built-up area and riders need to adhere to the town speed limits. Traffic is also higher here and there may be queues on busy days. After the next right turn which is Upper Thong, turn left onto Spring Gardens and follow the road into Holmfirth.

Ancoats to Daisy Nook Country Park

A nice route and destination suitable for an afternoon ride or day out. This route features some faster roads including some motorway. There is very little change in terrain making it an easy ride for all skill levels. Take the A662 towards the M60. Merge onto the A635 and head towards Ashton Under Lyme. At Ashton Under Lyme head north on the A627. Stay on A627 for approximately 5 miles and then follow the signs for Daisy Nook Country Park.
