SMALLING WOES: Defender suffers injury blow

Manchester United starlet Chris Smalling will miss England’s Euro 2012 campaign in Ukraine and Poland through injury next month.

The 22-year-old tore his groin muscle while playing against Swansea City last Sunday.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson explained that he tried to avoid aggravating Smalling’s injury.

The 70-year-old said: “Chris Smalling has had a bad injury from last week. We tried to take him off but Rio [Ferdinand] got a knock and he decided he could stay on, he thought.”

He added: “Smalling is going to miss the Euro Championships – [with] a torn groin muscle that we are assessing at the moment in terms of what we do with it. But certainly he's got a bad injury."

It is not all bad news for new England manager Roy Hodgson though, Ferguson did confirm that Danny Welbeck would be available for this summer’s tournament, even though he is recovering from an ankle injury.

Chelsea’s John Terry is tipped to take the injured Smalling’s place in England’s Euro 2012 squad.
