Salford City Reds have signed young Australian utility back Luke Towers from French side Limoux Grizzlies.

The 22-year-old will arrive in the UK today and is expected to challenge for Luke Patten’s fullback jersey when the popular Aussie returns down under at the end of the season.

Phil Veivers, Reds' head coach, said: “We have had very good reports on Luke and we'll see how he shapes up.

“I am told he is good enough for both the NRL and Super League. He will have to learn everything pretty quickly and we will have a good look at him.”

Reds Director of Football Steve Simms added: “Luke is an exciting player who can score tries and that is what the game is ultimately about.

“He's coming over and Phil will have a look at him and to be fair, he will be having a look at us at the same time.

“He comes with great reviews and we are looking forward to seeing what he has to offer.”

Towers, who has an English passport, has previously played for the Sydney Roosters in the NRL and can play at full-back, wing or in the halves.
