Come face to face with Voldemort’s creator: Manchester Printworks offer mascot design prize

Manchester Harry Potter fans have the chance to come face to face with the man behind the terrifying Voldemort.

The Printworks are looking for creative Mancunians to design their new mascot – and the lucky winner gets to meet the Hollywood special effects expert behind Harry’s nemesis.

Budding artists are asked to submit creative designs and the winning mascot will be brought to life by effects legend Shaune Harrison.

Shaune, who has worked on many other blockbusters such as Star Wars, will be on the panel of judges.

Fred Booth, Centre Director, said: “I’m sure the winner will design us an awe-inspiring new mascot which expert designer Shaune will then bring to life.

“We are very honoured to have the help of such a successful movie legend and it’s a great opportunity for the winner to be part of such a unique experience.

“We have already had some fantastic entries and we look forward to seeing more creative designs from the people of Manchester.”

The winning designs from each category will feature in their own comic strip within The Printworks’ newspaper – News of the Works – and the overall winning mascot will go on to have a regular comic strip and have their design created by Shaune.

The mascot competition will be split into three categories; under 11s, under 16s and 16 and over and from these three categories, one winner will be chosen as The Printworks’ new mascot.

MrBooth said: “The new mascot will be an essential member of The Printworks’ team and we want the new character to symbolise fun and entertainment, to be interesting, memorable and dynamic and to represent the legacy of The Printworks’.”

Shaune is coming to Manchester to open his own makeup academy later this year.

He started in the film industry in 1988 at the age of 20 working in the field of special make-up effects and has gone on to on work on blockbuster films including creating make up for Red Skull from Captain America.

He has also won several accolades including an award at the New York Short Film Festival for Art Direction.

Entries close on February 28 and the winners will be announced mid-March. The winner will work alongside Shaune to develop the design and bring it to life.
