SPOTLIGHT: Bébé's move to United

Manchester United could face questions from police over the transfer of forgotten striker Bébé.

The 21-year-old signed for United in August 2010 for £7.2m but has only made two senior appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, and is currently on loan to Turkish club Besiktas.

Ferguson famously admitted that he had never seen Bébé play before signing him from Vitória Guimarães, instead taking the recommendation of former assistant Carlos Queiroz.

The Guardian is reporting that police in Portugal, who are currently carrying out investigations into the deal, will want to speak to United to clarify their version of the deal.

Their investigation is focusing on who played what role in Bébé’s transfer after agent Jorge Mendes, who oversaw the moves of Christiano Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson to United, became the player’s agent shortly before the deal.

Bébé’s previous agent, Gonçalo Reis, is also being spoken to by police to clarify his role in the deal after he complained to the Portuguese football association of Mendes poaching his client before selling him to United, which breaches FIFA agent regulations.

A United spokeswoman said: "Clearly if the police ask us for information, we will co-operate with them. Nobody is suggesting that we have done anything wrong."
