Missing Stone Roses fan Chris Brahney was found dead in a canal near Salford Quays today.

Police were called to the Manchester Ship Canal, close to MediaCityUK, at around 9.35am following the discovery of a body.

Greater Manchester Police have now confirmed that the body is that of Mr Brahney, who was last seen by friends at about 11.30pm on Friday 29 June 2012, when he was at the Stone Roses concert in Heaton Park.

A post mortem examination is due to take place tomorrow.

A Facebook group was set up to help found the 22-year-old after his disappearance and more than 120,000 people joined.

Since police confirmed the identity of the body, tributes have poured in from well-wishers.

Group organiser, Francesca Tracey said: "The family would like to thank everyone for all the kind words, thoughts and prayers that you have sent our way. Thank you for all the support, it has given them immense strength and courage.

"Please respect the family’s wishes and ensure that they are left alone during this difficult time."

A Manchester City spokesman said: "The thoughts of everyone at MCFC are with the friends and family of Chris Brahney following today's sad news."

XFM Manchester DJ and former Inspiral Carpets members Clint Boon said: "It's the saddest thing. As a father and a music lover i'm completely gutted. All my love to Chris's family. I feel some of your pain."
