Gig preview: Rita Ora supports Coldplay @ Manchester City Etihad Stadium – June

By Ben Burrows

One of the world’s biggest bands are coming to Manchester as Coldplay bring their Mylo Xyloto tour to the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

The band, formed by lead vocalist Chris Martin and bassist Guy Berryman at University College London, have sold over 55 million records worldwide and have topped the albums chart five times.

Their latest offering, Mylo Xyloto, received a predictably lukewarm response from critics but fans have refused to heed the reviews with the current tour selling out in a matter of minutes.

The album has topped the charts in more than 30 countries and eager fans will pack out the home of the newly-crowned Premier League champions in their droves on Saturday and Sunday.

Their 2005 Glastonbury set has gone down in history as one of the most memorable in the festival’s history and they returned in 2011 to bring the house down once again.

The band have wowed crowds in the city before with gigs at the Manchester Arena and Lancashire County Cricket Club receiving rave reviews in recent years.

Scandinavian songstress Robyn is lined-up to support on Saturday while chart-topper Rita Ora is second on the bill on Sunday.

“Man it’s so exciting, I mean, it’s Coldplay!” Ora said. “They’re one of the biggest bands in the world and we’ve been all around Europe, including Switzerland and Madrid.”

Weather reports are less than stellar for the weekend but even a downpour won’t dampen the spirits of the fans at the Etihad – a memorable night awaits…
