Manchester schoolchildren break singing and signing Guinness World Record
Thousands of children from Manchester have sung and signed their way into Guinness World Record books this week.
Pupils from primary schools in Levenshulme, Crumpsall, Old Trafford, Moston, Didsbury, Walken and Blackley were among more than 130,000 youngsters worldwide taking part in the record attempt, organised by the charity SignHealth, on Wednesday.
The children simultaneously sung and signed a specially composed sign2sing song, at precisely 2.45 p.m.
Steve Powell, Chief Executive at SignHealth, said: “Hundreds of schools from all over the country, including Manchester, and overseas registered to take part in our Guinness World Record sign2sing project for the most people signing and singing at the same time.
“The schools range in size from 30 to 800 pupils, which, from our calculations, means more than 130,000 schoolchildren took part in the event.
“The exact number of participants will be confirmed by Guinness World Records at a later date.”
Almost 95,000 children took part in last February’s similar achievement, which helps to raise awareness of deafness and the work the charity is involved in. The record-breaking fundraiser helped to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds through business sponsorships and donations.
Steve added: “It has been a truly fantastic event and we’re extremely grateful for everyone who took part. At the moment we’re still counting the money raised but we’re hoping it will make a significant contribution to the work of the charity.”
SignHealth is the country’s only charity that focuses on improving the mental and physical health of deaf people.
The charity will be organising the sign2sing event again next year (2013). People wishing to take part are invited to contact SignHealth to register their interest.
