This Charming Grad: The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr honoured by University of Salford

The Smith’s guitarist, Johnny Marr, is having his ‘outstanding’ career in music recognised with an honorary degree by the University of Salford.

The guitarist and songwriter is credited with changing the face of British guitar music and inspiring a new generation of indie bands.

Now Marr will receive a doctorate of arts on Thursday July 19 as part of the University’s graduation ceremonies.

He joined the University of Salford in 2007 as a visiting professor in popular music. His regular masterclasses have taught young musicians studying at the University.

After The Smiths, Marr started a career as a co-writer and collaborator with a number of significant groups and musicians such as Talking Heads, The The, Bryan Ferry and Beck.

Marr is also credited with discovering Manchester super-band, Oasis.

He has been cited as an influence by many more bands, including Blur, Radiohead and Manic Street Preachers.

Marr said: “I’m very pleased to be given an honorary degree by Salford University.

“I've enjoyed working with the students in my capacity as visiting professor and hopefully we can find some more opportunities for creative work in the future.”

At the graduation ceremonies, held at The Lowry from Tuesday 17 to Friday 20 July, the University will also bestow honorary degrees on five other people in recognition of impressive attainment in their respective fields.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Hall said: “All our honorary graduands have made outstanding contributions to their fields of work and expertise, and we will be proud to have them join our community through these awards.”
