Wayne Rooney derby overhead wonder-goal is best-ever Premier League goal after winning fans vote

By Dean Wilkins

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is delighted to win the Premier League’s best-ever goal after his overhead wonder-strike against rivals City last season won the fans' vote.

The England star was chosen by voters online for the top spot in the top ten strikes from the past 20 years.

The February 2011 derby winner was followed by Arsenal legends Dennis Bergkamp in second and Thierry Henry in third.

Rooney said: "I grew up watching the Premier League so to be voted the scorer of the best goal in its history is a great feeling.

“There are so many good goals in that shortlist, goals that I watched in my living room as a kid: Alan Shearer's goal, Paulo Di Canio's, Tony Yeboah's, David Beckham's... to be competing with them and winning is a great honour for me and something I'm very proud of.

“I'd like to say a big thank you to all the fans that voted for me."

Ex-United winger David Beckham won the award in 2002 for his wonder-goal against Wilmbedon in 1996 when he lobbed the keeper – from the halfway line.

Further results will be announced for awards including best save, best match and best celebration.
