DAYS OF LIGHT: Thought provoking

By Claire Skegg

Award-winning dramatics company, Starving Artists, premier tropical play Days of Light at the Royal Exchange Studio, St Anne's Square this week.

Beginning their new UK tour, the celebrated company did not disappoint as actors Mark Pinkosh and Kate Layden commanded the juxtaposed stage and performed to their first eager Manchester audience.

At the intimate venue the powerful opening monologue of protagonist Milo flooded the studio with awakening prose, setting the tones of tension and passion that collide throughout the play.

Set on Hawaii's volcanic soil, writer Godfrey Hamilton once again explores vivid landscapes and poetic language, a talent that has won him continual critical acclaim.

The play gains momentum as Miss Pekoe 'preserved in gin, frozen by fear' appears in the character's distinctive theatrical style and presented in developing contrast to Milo's endearing prologues.

With a modest three characters, the intriguing Nathan evolving only between the turbulent conversations between his mother and his lover, it's easy to feel personally engaged in the drama erupting in front of you.

The delicate plot, directed by Jonathan Best, explores the whirlwind romance of jaded Milo and troubled poet Nathan.

Their chance 'love at first verse' meeting at a poetry night in an L.A bar leads them to Miss Pekoe's refuge and Nathan's home in the shadows of an unpredictable Hawiaan volcano.

While the drama unfolds the significance of the tranquil setting shines through. Hawaii's ancient legends provide a source of comfort and guidance for the characters as tragedy hits and the moving folk-law offers the audience sentiments they can take home with them.

Days of Light is a thought provoking and heart-warming production that, characteristic of Starving Artists' philosophy, will resonate throughout its diverse audiences.
