For one night only, innovative all-vocal group Naturally 7 are bringing their unique blend of bass heavy beat boxing and mesmerising a cappella harmonies to Manchester next week.
The Royal Northern College of Music will play host to the soulful Americans on Monday night as part of two exclusive UK shows.
If you haven’t heard of Naturally 7 yet, keep your eyes and ears peeled. With nearly five million hits on YouTube for their impromptu performance on a Parisian subway, the niche group are soon to cross the threshold onto the mainstream radar.
The group’s name is a nod to their septet set up and a cappella vocals – except this isn’t just a cappella in the traditional sense. They’ve developed their own brand of performance called VOCAL PLAY where they use their voices as the instruments. Trumpets, guitars, harmonicas, clarinets, bass and drums are all imitated with uncanny perfection and brought to life in a fusion of soul, hip hop and funk.
Their track ‘Wall of Sound’ is a mind bogglingly complex arrangement, layered with beats and bass which quite literally builds up to a wall of sound. Watch this video for the best air guitar solo you’ll see today.
Originally hailing from New York, musical director Roger Thomas and his brother Warren (no Gallagher-esque squabbles here) worked on creating their seven piece group of dynamic musicians.
After quietly touring around Europe, the group’s turning point came in 2007 when everyone’s favourite crooner took notice. Naturally 7 can add ladies’ man Michael Buble to their showbiz phonebook – the group have collaborated with him as the special guest stars on his popular TV Christmas Specials, and accompanied Buble on a world tour performing globally for millions of people.
Performing at California’s high profile TED conference in 2009 shows the group’s credentials for innovative music. The think tank’s slogan is ‘ideas worth spreading’, which fits neatly into Naturally 7’s approach to their live performances.
At their RNCM show on Monday night expect to hear distinctive and creative interpretations of motown classics and original material. This isn’t just barbershop stuff – Naturally 7 are engaging, amusing and inventive.
Coldplay, Brian Eno and Prince Charles have all had the pleasure of hearing Naturally 7’s live shows – the group are only playing two dates in the UK (heading down to London on February 7) so be sure to catch them here before they jet off.
Naturally 7 will be performing at the RNCM Theatre on Monday February 6, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £20, call the box office on 0161 907 5555 for more information.
