NEW DEAL: Rafael agrees four-year stay

By Dean Wilkins

Sir Alex Ferguson is expecting Brazilian youngster Rafael to be the world’s best full-back after signing a new four-year deal with Manchester United.

The 21-year-old joined the Reds four years ago with his twin brother Fabio and has made a promising progession into the club’s first team.

And Fergie believes that if he continues his development, the defender could up at the game’s highest level.

"Rafael has all the attributes to become one of the best full-backs in the world and I am delighted he has signed a new contract," said Ferguson.

"The boy has developed immensely since joining United, his energy and enthusiasm are a joy to watch.

"Rafael is one of the club's brightest young prospects; he has no fear of playing and has great belief in himself."

Speaking about his new deal, Rafael said: "I am so happy to sign a new contract.

"I love playing for Manchester United, there is a great team spirit here and a real desire to win.

"My time here has been unbelievable; winning two league titles, a league cup and a Club World Cup has made me hungry for more trophies.

"I would like to thank Sir Alex for his belief in me and I would also like to thank the fans for their support."

Rafael's twin brother Fabio has joined QPR on a season-long loan having made 53 appearances for the Reds but struggling to cement his place.

The club officially confirmed the departures of four players. Michael Owen, Tomas Kuszczak leave the first-team squad while 18-year-old goalkeepers Liam Jacob and Joe Coll have not been offered new contracts.

Kuszczak joined npower Championship side Brighton while Jacob has gone to Oldham.

Stoke City are allegedly chasing the ex-England striker after again struggling with injury last season.

"The club would like to thank all four players for their service and wish them the best of luck in the future," said a United statement.
